3 Tips to Help you Decorate this Holiday Season

The Christmas season is the perfect excuse to go a bit over-the-top with you decorating! However, if you are selling your house this holiday season, you might want to keep MOST of those decorations packed away for now. This may sound like a huge bummer for you but the bright side is you will have less to clean around for showings and you’ll thank yourself when Christmas clean-up time rolls around!

Here are my 3 pro tips for Christmas decorating while selling your home.

SKIP THE OUTDOOR DECORATIONS

Take a break this year and leave your sleigh and reindeer packed away. Also, no extensive outdoor Christmas lights… and if you leave them up year-round, you definitely want to remove them before listing! These items are very distracting and really throw off your curb appeal.

Consider simply placing a nice (neutral) wreath on your front door! It is welcoming and adds appropriate curb appeal for the festive season.

KEEP IT MINIMAL AND THINK NEUTRAL

Always remember that no matter what time of the year, you want to show off your actual house, not your things! Too many holiday items can be overbearing for sellers so keep indoor decorations minimal.

When in doubt, keep it classy by sticking to greenery and decor in neutral shades! Just like paint colours, neutral holiday decor will appeal to more buyers, which is your goal in staging for selling.

AVOID PUTTING UP CHRISTMAS TREES

I hate to say it but if possible, don’t put your tree up this year. You want to create larger looking areas and Christmas trees tend to take up a lot of room. Not to mention, trees can be very messy!

Instead, try playing with a smaller scale holiday floral arrangement.

SET THE AMBIANCE AND TEMPERATURE

Bonus tip!

During the winter months it can get very chilly… especially here in Canada. Always remember to adjust your thermostat to a warmer temperature so it is nice and cozy for potential buyers and if you have a fireplace, turn it on to set the cozy atmosphere!

In addition to the reasons above, we need to remember that one of the goals of staging for selling is to appeal to the greatest number of potential buyers. Although many of us are fortunate enough to enjoy the holidays, it’s not necessarily a happy season for all. Not to mention, some people don’t celebrate Christmas at all!

Wishing you happy holidays and lots of cheer!
